Moving into the CHPP

Learn how a coal wash plant behaves before you work in one

A coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP) washes raw coal from the pit so it can be sold. Most people who run or maintain one came from somewhere else on the mine: the pit, the workshop or a trade. This simulator lets you practise the plant's start-ups, trips and shutdowns before you are responsible for them.

Miners and tradespeople moving into the plant

CHPP roles on Queensland coal mines are often operator-maintainer roles. The ads ask for an electrical or mechanical trade. Some take time on a dozer on the stockpiles and the train load-out instead. They also ask for a coal board medical, a Standard 11 induction and CHPP competencies signed off on site.

A trade or pit time does not show you the process: what the dense medium circuit does when a pump trips, why density drifts, what a rising thickener bed means. The simulator gives you those events to work through, with a result for each.

Reliability engineers

CHPP performance is measured on availability. The simulator shows the operator side of a failure: what the crew sees, what they do in the first minutes and the result. Use it to understand the console your crews work from. It also helps plan the training part of a reliability improvement.

Graduate engineers new to large processing plants

Graduate engineers on big processing operations work alongside operators and maintainers on a plant they have mostly seen on drawings. Working the console through a start-up, upset events and a shutdown builds that process literacy in a plant you cannot break.

What you practise

Each attempt gets a result, Competent or Not Yet Competent, with what you did and when. Once you are Competent in all six you can print a completion record.

For employers and training teams

Want to run the simulator in your own learning system? It comes as a SCORM 1.2 package for your LMS. It can also be embedded in your own training platform. Results go into your records the same way, Competent or Not Yet Competent for each event.

Before you buy

The simulator is not a nationally recognised qualification, a ticket or a site competency. It does not replace training and sign-off on a real plant. It does not promise you a job. The plant is fictional, with realistic behaviour that is not taken from any real site.
